Constance McMillen, the high school senior who sued her school district over its ban on same-sex prom dates, including banning her from wearing a tuxedo instead of a gown, has transferred to a school in Mississippi’s capital.

McMillen told The Associated Press on Thursday that she now attends a school in Jackson, about 180 miles away.

The lesbian student filed a federal lawsuit against the Itawamba County School District in March over the district’s decision to cancel the prom rather than allow her to bring her girlfriend.

Afterward, McMillen said she faced hostility. Itawamba Agricultural High School’s students and teachers conspired to send Constance and several disabled students to a sham prom attended by seven people while the actual prom was held at a location secret only from them. Facebook pictures of the actual prom confirm this. They even had banners announcing “Prom 2010”.

McMillan won’t say which school she now attends, but she plans to graduate June 2.

Fred Phelps and his family, the members of his fundamentalist Baptist cult from Wichita, Kansas say they’ll protest the Itawamba graduation Saturday because they think parents didn’t teach their children to condemn homosexuality.
